What footballing event are you most looking forward to in the coming year?

There will be the battle for the five places at the 2006 World Cup in Germany as well as the race to qualify for the African Cup of Nations in Egypt.

Before that, Benin hosts the African Youth Championship for under-20 sides, with the semi-finalists all qualifying for the World Youth Championship in Holland later in the year.

The African Under-17 Championship will also take place this year in Gambia in May.

A hard-fought second qualifying stage between February and November this year saw eight Asian teams advance from their respective groups as top finishers, with the other 24 nations eliminated and licking their wounds. But three years on, nations from the western part of the region make up four of the eight teams, with Uzbekistan joining the impressive Middle Eastern trio of Saudi Arabia, Iran and Kuwait. The Uzbeks, who have been silent on the international stage since winning the 1994 Asian Games, have roared back a decade later-- impressing at this year’s Asian Cup and FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign, where they eliminated Olympic semi-finalists Iraq to finish top of Group 2.
